Advanced RYA Navigation, Pilotage & Offshore Passage Planning

Cruising around Islay and Jura

Our Figure-of-Eight cruise around Islay and Jura, combining challenging pilotage with memorable cruising.

The Advanced Shore-based Navigation Course

The RYA Yachtmaster Theory course is designed for experienced sailors and motor cruisers wishing to extend their navigation, pilotage and passage planning skills well beyond Day Skipper level.

It prepares candidates for serious coastal and offshore cruising, and provides the underpinning theory for those intending to progress towards the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore practical examinations.

The course assumes previous navigation knowledge and is therefore not intended for complete beginners. Homework exercises and regular chartwork are an important part of the programme.

Classroom course:
Starts each autumn using a flexible combination of evening classes and selected Saturdays.

Teaching combines the official RYA syllabus with practical examples drawn from many years of cruising throughout the UK, Atlantic and Mediterranean.

Advanced Navigation & Tidal Planning

Course to steer, tidal vectors and passage planning

Passage planning using tidal vectors, course-to-steer calculations and set and drift corrections.

The Yachtmaster syllabus develops the navigation skills introduced during Day Skipper into detailed offshore passage planning. Students learn how to combine traditional chartwork with modern electronic navigation systems to produce safe and efficient passages.

Subjects include advanced chart navigation, GPS and chart plotters, tidal streams, secondary ports, meteorology, pilotage, collision regulations and passage planning for both day and night sailing.

The emphasis throughout is on practical decision making using realistic cruising examples rather than simply solving examination questions.

Secondary port tidal calculations

Secondary Port tidal calculations are an essential Yachtmaster skill and are explained using practical examples.

Course Content

  • Advanced chart navigation
  • GPS and electronic navigation systems
  • Tidal vectors and secondary ports
  • Course to steer calculations
  • Meteorology and weather routing
  • Pilotage and harbour approaches
  • Collision Regulations (IRPCS)
  • Passage planning for coastal and offshore cruising
  • Night navigation
  • Safety and rescue at sea
  • Homework exercises reinforce each subject and prepare students for the final RYA assessment while building confidence for practical cruising.

Practical Seamanship & Real Cruising Experience

Quiet anchorage on the Isle of Skye

Skye – beautiful cruising away from the busy tourist anchorages. Real cruising experience forms an important part of the classroom discussions.

Throughout the course, navigation techniques are illustrated using real passages sailed around the British Isles. Rather than simply solving chart exercises, students learn how experienced skippers make practical decisions when weather, tides and sea conditions rarely follow the textbook.

Pilotage, weather forecasts, tidal gates, harbour approaches and contingency planning are continually linked together so that each passage becomes a logical decision-making exercise rather than an isolated navigation calculation.

The Yachtmaster course places particular emphasis on developing judgement, allowing students to understand not only how to navigate, but also why one option is often safer than another.

    Pilotage into Loch Tarbert

Pilotage into Loch Tarbert demands careful planning using charts, transits, tidal information and local knowledge.

    Skills Developed

  • Pilotage into unfamiliar harbours
  • Passage planning using real cruising examples
  • Night navigation techniques
  • Weather interpretation and decision making
  • Safe harbour selection and alternative plans
  • Offshore navigation with electronic aids
  • Combining traditional navigation with GPS and chart plotters
  • These practical examples help students prepare not only for the Yachtmaster Theory examination but also for confident skippering during extended coastal and offshore cruising.

    Course Information & Booking

The Yachtmaster Theory course is normally delivered throughout the autumn and winter using a flexible combination of evening classes together with selected Saturday sessions.
